A Government issued Birth Certificate is required to establish legal identity, obtain a Canadian passport, apply for a health card, driver’s license, social insurance number, enroll in school, settle an estate or access pension benefits.

Who Can Apply?

Every child born in Yukon must be registered with Yukon Vital Statistics before applying for a Birth Certificate.

You can apply for an Yukon Birth Certificate if you are:

The person whose name appears on the certificate;

Parents of the person named on the certificate;

A legal guardian of the person named on the certificate.

The executor of the person’s estate (must submit death certificate).

Documents Available to Order

Before applying, find out the type and format of the document required by contacting the organization to which you must submit it.

Documents:

Birth Certificate with Individual Information Only: The Individual Information Only Birth Certificate contains basic information: full name of individual, date of birth, place of birth, sex, registration number, and registration date.

Birth Certificate with Individual & Parental Information: The Individual and Parental Information Birth Certificate contains all the information as stated above, plus the names of parents and birthplaces of parents (province/country only).

When submitting an application concerning the birth of a minor, we recommend requesting the Individual & Parental Information Birth Certificate, as it includes the parents’ names. Some organizations require this type of certificate in the case of minors.

Restricted Photocopy: A Restricted Photocopy is a copy of the original Registration of Birth and is usually required for legal purposes. They are by law for restricted use only. If you believe you need such a certificate, please state your reason.

Applications may be delayed or rejected if inadequate information is provided or if there is a discrepancy between information provided and the government records. If no record of the birth is found by Yukon Vital Statistics, fees will be applied to the search cost and will not be refunded.
